If you have a cockroach problem in your apartment, there is a good chance your entire building has a cockroach problem. You can set up roach traps and bait, and you may use over-the-counter spray to kill roaches on site. Unfortunately, this may only keep the problem at bay.

Roaches breed quickly and produce dozens of eggs at once, so it's nearly impossible to keep the infestation in a single apartment. Additionally, it is impossible to tell if your neighbors are cleaning or taking preventative measures to help with the roach problem. If your landlord is having the building sprayed by a cockroach exterminator, you can take a few simple measures to prepare your apartment.

Empty Out Your Cupboards And Kitchen Cabinets

Roaches will eat any type of food that they can get access to, so they are likely to be in your cupboards and kitchen cabinets. If you remove all food and dishes from these areas, the exterminator can spray them thoroughly. This can help prevent roaches from coming back to the area.

As an added precaution, seal any opened bags or boxes of food or dispose of them. Use plastic containers with lids to store foods like pasta and cereal because roaches can eat through cardboard. If you do leave any dishes in your cabinets during the extermination, make sure to run them through the dishwasher afterwards. This should remove any chemicals from your dinnerware.

Leave A Note For The Cockroach Exterminator

If you plan to leave your apartment while the exterminator treats it, consider leaving him or her a note. Your note can be brief; it is simply helpful for the exterminator in making sure the job gets done effectively. Here are some things to consider mentioning in your note:

  • Problem Areas. Write down the areas in your apartment where you notice the most cockroach activity.

  • Areas you do not want sprayed. For example, you may not want your baby's nursery to be sprayed due to the chemicals.

  • The level of cockroach activity you see. Let the exterminator know how severe the problem is. Do you seen ten roaches a day? Do one or two simply scurry by now and then? Giving feedback like this can be very useful in resolving the problem.

With these tips in mind, you can start preparing your apartment for the upcoming cockroach extermination. Preparation is much easier than you think, especially when you break it down into simple steps like this. With high-quality treatment and persistent maintenance, you can live in a cockroach-free environment.
